Good footwear is essential to all sports. Whether the movement is forwards or in multiple directions, the forces generated by the legs are transferred to the ground by the feet to bring about motion. Any slipping of the foot inside the shoe or instability of the foot or shoe itself will result in unnecessary movement which will use up precious energy and so decrease speed and power of movement. Not only will performance be affected, but this instability can pose a risk of injury. One of the focuses of ASICS shoes is therefore stability. Innovations such as the Trusstic System, DuoMax and Personal Heel Fit all help to provide natural gait. ASICS however has long recognised the perfect design of the human foot. The Biomorphic design of the ASICS shoes allows the upper to move in the same way as the foot. These make the shoes very comfortable and feel almost like a second skin. Ultimately, shoe should not be an extension of the foot, but be part of the foot.
It was 1977 that ASICS realised that “women run different” and was the first brand to introduce a running shoe with a women’s specific last. ASICS pioneered women’s shoe technology based on a commitment to bring out the best in all athletes.
ASICS recognises the significant biomechanical differences between men and women that can affect the performance of the athlete. This performance can be influenced by athletic footwear, and ASICS’ landmark I.G.S design philosophy is leading the way in this regard. Our research has revealed that women have unique injury patterns, with specific ligaments more likely to sustain injury than in men. Concentrations of hormones are one of the factors thought to be responsible for increased ligament injury in women. Specifically, oestrogen, which is found in much higher concentrations in women than in men, is known to be a soft tissue relaxant that may predispose female athletes to injury.
Given these differences, it’s clear that women need different running shoes. Not just miniature, pastel-shaded versions of men’s shoes, but made-to-measure equipment that takes into consideration the specific requirements of the female physiology.

The GEL-KAYANO 18 continues to live up to its reputation as the leading structured cushioning shoe on the market. The shoe’s blend of cushioning and support is perfect for the mild to moderate over-pronator. This edition introduces a newly designed Dynamic DuoMax that offers a smoother, more comfortable ride. It also includes a full length Guidance Line, which encourages a more efficient gait, even when fatigue sets in. Working together with Personal Heel Fit, the new Clutch Collar System locks around the heel to create an amazingly comfortable fit. The GEL-KAYANO 18 is ideal for long training runs, providing both the support and comfort runners need.
The ASICS GEL cushioning system is a key component in meeting the needs of runners, both recreational and professional. When running, the foot can typically experience forces of 3 to 5 times the runners body weight during heel strike. The GEL cushioning system, in conjunction with the midsole material and construction, absorbs the impact forces. In combination with the GEL, there are also grooves in the rear foot which help stabilise the foot during heel contact. The ASICS GEL cushioning system has been developed in many densities and shapes in order to meet the specific needs of the individual runner.
PHF or Personal Heel Fit, is made of a high density foam which moulds perfectly around the shape of the heel and Achilles tendon, therefore decreasing the slippage and improving the comfort and fit. PHF adjusts to the differences in individual heel shape and structure, thereby providing improved comfort and fit. This is achieved through a special high density, self-moulding foam that hugs the contour of the heel, but rebounds to its original shape when not in use. Each time an athlete slips his or her shoe on, the PHF will adjust to hug the heel, providing customised comfort for each use.
Dynamic DuoMax is a new development consisting of a dual density midsole material. It is placed in a strategic location to reduce the effects of overpronation and enhance natural motion. Found only in shoes that address the needs of the overpronator, Dynamic DuoMax stabilises the foot prior to propulsion. Dynamic DuoMax also helps to reduce excessive movement around the joints and therefore minimises the risk of injury.
The Trusstic System is a lightweight stabilisation unit integrated within the EVA midsole which links the rearfoot and the forefoot and shores the midfoot as it prepares for the propulsion phase. The Space Trusstic system in the GEL-KAYANO 18 has been suspended below the midsole EVA and forms a distinct pocket into which the EVA of the shoe’s midfoot section can distort. This results in a controlled deformation of the material in direct response to the load of the foot, thereby maintaining the torsional stability of the shoe and takes pressure away from the foot sole.
By bringing together all of the most advanced ASICS technologies, I.G.S – Impact Guidance System – embraces cushioning, stability and flexibility. The objective of the I.G.S concept is to ensure that the individual shoe components and technologies work together as effectively as the parts of the human foot.
Eight factors are taken into consideration when developing an I.G.S shoe. These are flexibility, lightweight, cushioning, stability, breathability, grip, fitting and durability. The overall result of applying the I.G.S concept is a smoother, more comfortable step, an improved gait and a more enjoyable run.
The Guidance Line places a visible groove in the mid and outsole that follows the foot's centre of pressure from heel to toe. The result is a more adaptive running platform, creating a smoother transition from heel strike to toe-off with each stride. The Guidance Line thus helps runners to maintain a natural, efficient gait, especially over long distances.
Gender Specific Forefoot Cushioning refers to the inclusion of specially formulated Solyte material in the forefoot. The material's density is reduced, allowing the female foot to compress it sufficiently and benefit fully from the bounce-back qualities of Solyte. Traditionally, women's running shoes contained cushioning material of the same density as men's. However, as women are usually lighter than men, the female foot would not fully compress the material, resulting in a less than optimal ride. Gender Specific Forefoot Cushioning addresses this issue and provides women with a more comfortable and responsive ride. The cushioning material, located under the ball of the foot and extending across the width of the shoe, also acts as an efficient shock absorber.
